17 Dec Los Gatos Ballet Brings The Magic Home This Holiday Season
The Nutcracker is a tradition that transports viewers to a joyous world where imagination reigns supreme. This year, creativity was essential in producing a way for the tradition to continue without interruption. Knowing the holidays would not be the same without the Nutcracker, Los Gatos Ballet is proud to announce that it is bringing the holiday classic to life through Nutcracker Movie Magic, a 1st ever virtual performance of the Nutcracker that viewers can enjoy from the comfort of their own home. The movie will be available for viewing December 18th to 31st with an on-demand pass that is purchased through Eventbrite.
Los Gatos Ballet continues to travel the road of discovery during the current restrictions due to COVID-19. Marcie Ryken, Artistic Director, states, “ When challenges present, you must lean in and discover the possibilities. This is when true creativity is born and resilience is cultivated.”
Knowing the theater was off limits this season, Los Gatos Ballet provided a creative option to keep the dancers inspired, staff employed, and patrons engaged through this virtual performance. Christine Zillman, Outreach/Marketing Director, followed her passion to share the joy of the arts this season despite the restrictions, “Our movie showcases our organization beyond the performance. It’s a story about the resilience of the performing arts, children, and small businesses during this extraordinary time.”
Nutcracker Movie Magic ignites the spirit of the season and shines a spotlight on the entire process from auditions to performance. Dancers share their insights, joys, and struggles as they discuss what motivates and drives them to express themselves through dance. Leadership shed light on their processes, hopes, and joy of witnessing the dedication and commitment of all involved. Senior members of the company who are graduating this season, are particularly grateful for the opportunity to perform. Sadie Weaver states, “The Nutcracker has been one of my favorite shows since I was a little girl. You get to enter a world of magic and share the experience with the audience, which is so gratifying. Christmas wouldn’t be the same without the Nutcracker.”
For the returning patrons, the costumes will look familiar, but the choreography and sets will have a fresh look. Much of the choreography had to be adapted to support safe distancing. Kristin D’Addario, Artistic Associate, states “What is perceived as a limitation actually gives way to new pathways in choreography. There was a lot of reshaping that took place this year, and it was fun to see how our restrictions presented new opportunities for both spatial design and the expansion of individual roles.”
Through the Nutcracker Movie Magic, Los Gatos Ballet is grateful for the opportunity to expand its reach to patrons across the globe. This virtual performance has the potential of raising a substantial portion of the funds necessary to sustain its programs and build community through dance.
