Centering
Pilates brings the focus of the whole exercise to the center of the body, which is described as the “Powerhouse”. Its location is in between the pubic bone and the lower ribs. The movement is energetically and purposefully sourced from the center, which results in making this system effective in concentrating on the core.
Control
Pilates exercises require total muscular control. The technique is strategically created to ensure that no part of your body is left uncontrolled or missed out. Each exercise will give you the opportunity to work on correct muscle patterning, alignment and control. In order to attain these goals, concentration is required.
Precision
Attention to detail is required in order to transform one’s body. Executing each exercise with correct technique and precision will provide more dramatic results.
Breathe
Pilates exercises are coordinated with proper breathing patterns to facilitate core support. Joseph Pilates taught that deep breathing helps oxygenate the blood and removes waste from the body. A positive result of breath work is a relief from fatigue, stress, and lack of concentration.
Concentration
Without concentration and presence, change can’t be made. Focusing on a deepening awareness of the movement makes concentration an integral part of the technique. Joseph H. Pilates believed that it is the mind that guides the body. We center the mind with the body in action – bringing – ‘the five aspects of the mind’ :
- Intelligence
- Intuition
- Imagination
- Will
- Memory
